French Prime Minister Jean Castex on Friday announced that from Sunday France will close its borders to non-European Union countries in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Mr. Castex added that those entering France from the EU will also need to present “a negative PCR test”.  In a video shared on his official Twitter page on Friday, Mr. Castex said the decision to shut France borders to countries outside the European Union is to avoid a new lockdown and its possible disruptions.

“We know the grave impact (of a lockdown). Tonight, looking at the data of the past few days, we consider that we can still give ourselves a chance to avoid one,” Mr Castex said. “Our duty is to do all we can to avoid a new lockdown, the coming days will be crucial.”

Clarifying Mr. Castex announcement, Grant Shapps, UK Transport Secretary, said in a tweet that trade will continue as usual as the restriction will not “apply to haulier”.

“French PM Jean Castex has announced that France is to close its borders to all countries outside the EU from Sunday. However, I can confirm that this does NOT apply to hauliers, so trade will continue to flow smoothly,” Mr. Shapps said.

France has recorded more than three million cases and over 75,000 deaths linked to coronavirus, The country said over one million of its citizens and residents have been vaccinated.
