Customs seize used clothing, tyres, cannabis, hand over suspects to police

The Nigeria Customs Service, Port Harcourt Court Area 11 Command, on Friday, handed two suspects, a pistol and 9mm ammunition to the Nigeria Police Force.
The command’s Comptroller, Baba Imam, made this known while addressing journalists and declaring the seizures at the command’s corporate office at Onne, Rivers State.
He, however, attributed the achievements to renewed mindset engendered through training and retraining of officers as well as adequate provision of logistics and incentives to the service.
He stated that nine containers with duty paid value of over N1.16 billion were also confiscated by officers of the area command.
Mr Imam added, “The following goods were seized in nine containers for contravening import prohibition laws: 724 bales of used clothing, 1,805 pieces of used tyres, four vehicles used in concealing 76.9kg special cannabis (marijuana), 2,070 cartons of tomato paste, among others.”
He also said that the command had so far generated N246 billion from January to October.
He said this represented a significant increment of more than N44 billion generated for the 2022 fiscal year.
The comptroller also noted that the command realised more than N38 billion in October alone, thereby exceeding its monthly revenue target of N28 billion.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ashu Ota, in charge of operations of the Eastern ports, on behalf of the police, took delivery of the two suspects including the exhibits.
He also called for public participation to enhance effective policing and crime reduction.
“I’m pleased with the high level of synergy and commitment between the Nigerian Customs Service and the police. Upon completion of the handing over and subsequent taking over of the suspects and exhibits, the police will continue investigation,” he said.
