Data show soaring food prices under Tinubu’s government

Data collected by a business ecosystem, Draft Africa, showed a 400 per cent surge in the prices of staple food since President Bola Tinubu assumed office more than a year ago.
A basket of tomatoes used to cost N35,000, but now increased to N100,000 in June and a staggering N180,000 this July —a 400 per cent rise. Fifty kg bag of brown beans sold for N26,000 under Mr Buhari but the price jumped to N115,000 in June and further increased to N145,000 in July, evidencing a 400 per cent increase under Mr Tinubu’s administration.
Also, a 50kg basket of scotch bonnet that sold for N18,000 in 2023 rose as high as N120,000 last June and N220,000 this July, indicating over 1000 per cent jump in food prices.
In 2023, red chili pepper was N22,000 for a basket but in June 2024, the price jerked up to N110,000, evidencing a 400 per cent increase. The price recently dropped to N74,800 in July. 100kg of onions jerked up from N25,000 last year to N70,000 in June 2024 and N110,000 in July.
Under Mr Buhari, one basket of bell pepper cost N21,000 but it sold for N95,000 under Mr Tinubu in June and in July, N175,000.
A 50kg bag of local rice which sold for N48,000 under former president Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, sold for N65,000 last month and further increased to N99,990 in July.
Foreign rice, on the other hand, that sold for N55,000 under Mr Buhari rose to N90,000 last June and N134,000 this month under Mr Tinubu.
Garri, a formerly affordable staple food in many Nigerian homes, which cost N22,000 last year sold for N50,000 in June and N94,000 in July indicating an almost 400 per cent increase under Mr Tinubu.
A crate of eggs that sold for N1800 as of last year, sold for N5200 this July while a carton of noodles formerly N6000 retailed at N8000.
Many Nigerians tired of the rising inflation are planning a nationwide protest against the current administration for 10 days starting on Thursday.
Government officials have continued to appeal to shelve the exercise and embrace dialogue with the President on the way forward.
