President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has offered to get Nigerian students whose academics have been affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine admission into Nigerian universities for them to complete their studies. 

This offer came amid a prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities which has ground academic activities in universities across the country.

“The federal government of Nigeria wishes to inform Nigerian students who returned from Ukraine following the conflict in that country, that efforts are being made to facilitate their placement into various Nigerian tertiary institutions, to enable them continue their studies,” said an advertorial by Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry.

The advertorial, dated July 4 and signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson Francisca K. Omayuli, called on interested Nigerian students in Ukraine to visit the ministry’s website for further details. 

Federal universities across the nation have been shut down amid ASUU’s over three months’ strike. 

The union has accused successive Nigerian governments of refusing to implement the agreements they reached in 2009.

ASUU is demanding Mr Buhari adopt the Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for paying universities’ staff salaries instead of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System and the payment of academic earned allowance (EAA), among others.
