The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the murder of some soldiers during a midnight attack on a military base by suspected terrorists in Benisheikh, Borno State.

In a statement on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the attack occurred at about 12:30 a.m. when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the 29 Task Force Brigade headquarters.

He stated that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, responded with “exceptional courage, professionalism and superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat.

“The insurgents were decisively engaged and forced to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission and leaving behind traces of their failed assault,” the statement said.

The defence headquarters described the attack as a sign of desperation by the terrorists following recent losses in the North-East.

“Regrettably, the encounter resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Mr Onoja added.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, commended the troops for their bravery and honoured the fallen soldiers.

“Their courage will forever remain a source of pride and inspiration to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the entire nation. The High Command extends its deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” he said.

He also urged the public and the media to allow the military to notify the next of kin before releasing further details.

The Peoples Gazette earlier reported that terrorists overran military formation, killed a commander and some solders.
