A group of surgeons at the Trincomalee District General Hospital in Sri Lanka removed a 3.1-kilogramme bladder stone measuring between 14 and 19 centimetres from a stroke patient during medical treatment.

Doctors said the paralysed 55-year-old patient, who had the ostrich egg-sized bladder stone, had been admitted to the hospital since July for an operation.

He found it difficult to urinate, which prompted further investigation.

According to News1st, the urologist who led the surgery, Pragaladhan Balakrishnan, stated that examinations conducted on him showed the presence of a mass in his abdominal area,

The surgery was performed on Friday, after which the bladder stone, also weighing as much as a newborn baby, was removed.

Mr Balakrishnan said, “This achievement is the result of a collective team effort. Initial examinations revealed that the patient had a massive bladder stone. The case was subsequently referred to our specialist team.

“Following all necessary surgical procedures, we successfully removed the stone from the patient’s bladder. According to available records, it is the largest bladder stone ever documented and removed through surgery.”

He further disclosed that available records showed that “this is the largest bladder stone documented and surgically removed to date”, while confirming that the patient’s current health condition is “very good”, and he remains in the hospital receiving treatment for his stroke and other health issues.
