Donald Trump sues over FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate
Former United States President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over their raid of his Mar-a-Lago estate two weeks ago.
On Monday, the motion was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The lawsuit asks a judge to appoint a special master to review the materials seized by the government. Mr Trump also argues the materials were taken under an “overbroad warrant.”
“Law enforcement is a shield that protects Americans. It cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes,” It said in the document. “Therefore, we seek judicial assistance in the aftermath of an unprecedented and unnecessary raid on President Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago.”
A special master is appointed in criminal cases when there are concerns that some materials collected by the authorities should not be viewed by investigators as it is protected by attorney-client privilege or if there are other concerns around it being used in a prosecution.
Mr Trump also requests that the Department of Justice be required to provide him with a detailed inventory of all the property seized at the Palm Beach resort, and that the federal government return any seized item that was not within the scope of the search warrant authorizing the raid.
Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate had been raided by agents of the FBI in early August, a move which the former president deemed “politically motivated“. Mr Trump is speculated to run for office in 2024.
