The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says Bauchi drivers using hard drugs are responsible for rising road crashes in Bauchi.

Sector commander Yusuf Abdullahi on Monday lamented the increasing loss lives due to drivers’ use of hard drugs.

“Some of these drivers live on substances. They live on hard drugs either to keep them awake or to endure long-distance movement, forgetting that there is no way you can cheat nature,” explained Mr Abdullahi.

He added, “Your senses must be fine, so as to drive within the limit of traffic rules and regulations, and by the time the drug starts deceiving them, they overdo things and before you know, something negative might happen.”

He also identified the non-installation of speed-limiting devices by commercial drivers as another factor responsible for road crashes in Bauchi.

The FRSC official noted that installing the SLD device would go a long way in controlling speed and reducing road crashes.

“Drivers are not adhering to the installation of the SLD device,” he said.

He noted that drivers passing through Bauchi also do not install the speed limit device, adding that “mostly, they are the ones crashing here in Bauchi state”.

Mr Abdullahi further mentioned that the corps would strengthen partnership with voluntary community organisations to scale up sensitisation towards promoting safety on the road.

He stated that the corps had informed Bauchi’s chief imam and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)’s chairman of the need for sensitisation in churches and mosques.
