Ishiagu Community Development Union (ICDU), a socio-cultural organisation of Ishiagu in the Ivo LGA of Ebonyi, has inaugurated 40 committees to fast-track socio-economic development.

The president-general of the union, Moses Aja, inaugurated the committee members at a brief ceremony held at the community’s civic centre in Ishiagu on Thursday.

Addressing journalists at the end of the exercise, Mr Aja said the inauguration of the committees, saddled with the responsibility of driving the town’s development agenda, fulfilled the union’s constitutional provisions.

“The establishment of statutory committees is part of the provisions of our constitution, which are gazetted, and they include education, works, finance, audit, the unified traditional institution and conflict resolution committees, among others.

“In addition to these committees, the executive, with the approval of the General Assembly of ICDU, established other specialised committees, known as special purpose vehicles (SPVs), all in a bid to fast-track socio-economic and infrastructural development of the community.

“So, we have committees for a new stadium, children’s park, new ultra-modern markets, sports club, health, drug abuse and committee for electricity reticulation, among others,” he said.

Mr Aja said the setting up of the various committees was to enable the administration to tap from the wealth of experience of the various members to speed up the development of the community.

“Two good heads are always better than one. As members of the executive, we are not going to be able to do this work alone. So we need to bring in good heads from different parts of the community for several reasons.

“One, when we are together, we will be able to do this work together and ensure that getting people involved means those whose projects they are doing will own such projects. So, for each project they are involved in doing, they will be responsible for owning the project and ensuring that it is delivered for the good of the people,” said Mr Aja.

According to him, the task of community development is too daunting to be left in the hands of a few individuals, hence the need to bring on board other capable hands.

He urged members of the committees to put in their best to the service of the community.
