The Economic Community of West African States has commended Togo’s double election to elect new members of parliament and regional advisors.

Led by former Gambian Vice-President Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, the regional bloc expressed satisfaction after monitoring the polling stations in Lomé, the Togolese capital.

Ms Jallow-Tambajang, who is the head of the regional bloc for the election observation mission to the country, saluted the timely opening of most of the polling stations despite a slight delay in some of them.

She also commended the peaceful, disciplined conduct of electoral procedures and the availability of electoral materials and officials at the polling stations.

At least 4.2 million Togolese went to the polls in over 14,000 polling stations to elect their new Members of Parliament and Regional Advisors in the poll that opened on Monday.

Earlier, the regional bloc dispatched 40 observers for the legislative and regional elections in the country.

The deployment was in line with ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting member states in conducting their elections as outlined in Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
