The Ekiti government has reassured residents of the state of adequate protection of lives and property despite rising concerns over reports of banditry in some neighbouring states.

The special adviser to the governor on security matters, retired Brig.-Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana, gave the assurance in Ado-Ekiti on Monday during the quarterly security meeting with heads of security agencies.

The meeting was also attended by chairmen of the 16 local government areas.

Mr Ogundana said Governor Biodun Oyebanji is in full control of the security situation in the state, stressing that Ekiti would continue to maintain its status as one of the safest states in the country due to proactive measures put in place, particularly in border communities.

He commended residents for providing timely intelligence that had helped security agencies forestall threats, noting that the cooperation between government and the public has been instrumental in surmounting security challenges.

He also disclosed that Ekiti borders are adequately secured with strong military and police presence, supported by an effective intelligence and surveillance network.

“We’ve been observing unusual activities along border communities with Kogi and Kwara States, and these incidents have created unnecessary panic among our people. After briefing the Governor, he directed that we engage all stakeholders,” he said.

According to him, meetings have been held with traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders, while the engagement with local government chairmen aims to harmonise strategies to ensure heightened security, particularly in areas bordering volatile states.

Mr Ogundana urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movement or information to the nearest security agency rather than dismissing such details.

“We have sufficient resources to verify any information received.

“What is happening in Kogi and Kwara affects farmers, herders, and entire communities. We are taking proactive steps to ensure such incidents do not spill over into Ekiti,” he added.

He assured that the government would continue to prioritise safety and maintain close coordination with all security formations to guarantee peace across the state.
