Electoral Act: Senate inaugurates ad hoc committee to collate senators’ contributions

The Senate has set up an ad hoc committee to galvanise and distill opinions of senators on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made the announcement on Thursday after a closed session.

The lawmakers, had in the executive session, begun considering the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters chaired by Senator Simon Lalong.

The closed session was convened to allow lawmakers to thoroughly examine the proposed amendments and supporting documents before engaging in further legislative debate on the bill.

Making the announcement, Mr Akpabio said “The Senate has set up a small committee to further make contributions, galvanise, distill all the opinions of distinguished senators and present them to us for final deliberation on Tuesday.

“Senator Niyi Adegbonmire will serve as Chairman while the members are Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye and Titus Zam. The committee has 48 hours, or at most three days, within which to conclude its assignments and refer to the Senate before our next plenary, which comes up on Tuesday. The Clerk of the Senate will be the secretary of this committee.”
