The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) on Monday advised electricity consumers within its network to prioritise safety in handling electrical appliances during the rainy season.

Emeka Ezeh, the head of corporate communications at EEDC, issued the advisory in a statement in Awka.

Mr Ezeh said the rainy season comes with increased risks of electrical hazards, such as electrocution, electrical fires, and damage to appliances.

He said the advisory was necessary considering the nature of the electricity network obtainable in the environment.

According to him, lightning could strike power lines or buildings and pose a risk of electrocution, which could cause power surges and consequent damage to electrical gadgets.

He urged residents to report cases of fallen poles or dangling cables to the emergency helpline 08150824301.

“With all these conditions in mind, it is imperative that as a responsible corporate organisation, we educate our customers on the need to stay safe during the rainy season,” he said.

Mr Ezeh urged parents to ensure that children stay away from electrical poles, transformers, and open wires and to switch off electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
