Marauding elephants have invaded farm fields in the Gamboru/Ngala Local Government Area of Borno.

Confirming the development to journalists on Friday, Ayuba Peter, the director of forestry and wildlife in the Borno ministry of environment, stated that the ministry had received reports and was mobilising a team to go to the area.

Mr Peter explained that the elephants had come from Waza National Park in neighbouring Cameroon Republic.

“The herd is from Waza National Park and every year, it moves from Cameroon to Nigeria and back again at this period, following a route that passes through Gamboru/Ngala and Kala-Balge LGAs.

“We have mobilised our personnel and are now waiting for the Federal Ministry of Environment personnel to join us any moment now to move to the area,” Mr Peter said.

Also commenting on the development, Mustafa Bukar, the director of pest control in the Borno ministry of agriculture, mentioned that he had heard about the incident but had not yet received any official complaints from the affected area.

“So far, we have only received complaints about Quela birds and grasshoppers in the Dikwa, Molai, and Muna axis of Dikwa, Konduga, and Jere LGAs, which have been contained,” Mr Bukar said.
