The #EndSARS uprising is now in its third week and demonstrators are still resolute.

In the past week, states like Lagos and Kaduna began preparing panels to probe police corruption and brutality. Meanwhile, federal officials have been conciliatory but firm – even antagonistic at points.

Senate President Ahmed Lawan and Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila appealed to campaigners to put protests on hold so the government would have some space to implement reform. The same day, the information minister Lai Mohammed described the current state as a “volatile situation that can lead to anarchy if the government does not take some very firm steps to protect the lives and livelihood of innocent Nigerians.”

The army had said in a statement earlier in the week that it is “ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively.”
