Enugu Assembly elects new speaker

Uche Ugwu (PDP-Udi North) was elected the eighth speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday.
Ezenta Ezeani (PDP-Igbo-Etiti East) was elected as the assembly’s deputy speaker.
The two principal officers were elected unopposed at the inauguration of the assembly.
In his inaugural speech, Mr Ugwu, the deputy speaker of the previous assembly, appreciated his colleagues for entrusting him with the house leadership.
Mr Ugwu promised his leadership would be fair to all members and newly-elected lawmakers, irrespective of party affiliations.
He assured the state people that the assembly would live up to expectations by delivering the dividends of democracy.
The speaker pledged that the assembly would adopt negotiation and diplomacy in resolving conflicts that might arise with the executive arm of government.
Mr Ugwu solicited his colleagues’ cooperation and support in achieving the current assembly’s lofty objectives.
He said other principal officers of the assembly would be named at the next adjourned date on July 11.
