EPL: Chelsea end six-game winless run with narrow victory over Leeds United

Struggling Chelsea has beaten Leeds United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to earn their second Premier League win of the year thanks to a second-half header by Wesley Fofana.
Prior to the game, Chelsea were on a six-game winless run across all competitions, and needed a win to turn their woeful fortunes around after spending more than close to €400 million on new players during the January transfer window.
Both teams made several attacking threats in each other’s half in the tightly-contested first half but it was Chelsea that looked most dangerous but lacked the cutting edge to put the ball into the net as the half ended goalless.
However, eight minutes into the second half England international Wesley Fofana finally broke the deadlock for the Blues through a powerful header from Ben Chilwell’s corner into the net to secure the long-anticipated win for Chelsea.
Leeds United had the opportunity to equalise just on the hour mark when Georginio Rutter was unable to convert Luke Ayling’s cross. Rutter hit the ball on Kalidou Koulibaly’s legs, thus giving Kepa a chance to claim it.
At the end of the day, Fofana’s goal was all that Chelsea needed to pick up the maximum points, their first win in six games across all competitions and temporarily release pressure off under fire manager Graham Potter’s shoulder.
Chelsea remains 10th on the table, a very familiar position for the Blues in recent weeks, and has earned the Londoners the nickname “consistenth” from rival fans across social media.
Elsewhere, Wolves beat Tottenham 1-0 thanks to Adama Traore’s last minute goal, Aston Villa pip Crystal Palace by the same scoreline, Brighton thrashed struggling West Ham 4-0 while the match between Brentford and Fulham was postponed.
