Extortionist bags four months’ jail in Abuja

A 25-year-old Umar Ismahi has been sentenced to four months imprisonment after the court convicted him for extortion.
A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Monday heard how Mr Ismahi of Map Global junction, Gwarinpa, Abuja waylaid a passerby Felix Awolow on August 8 and ordered him to hand over his mp3 radio or he will be cut with a cutlass.
Prosecution counsel Chinedu Ogada said Mr Awolow complied under threat but soon reported to police operatives down the area.
The police gave Mr Ismahi a hot chase, arrested him and recovered the mp3 radio from him. He was later processed for arraignment.
Mr Ogada said the offence contravened the provisions of section 291 of the Penal Code.
The accused pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
Judge Sulyman Ola, however, gave Mr Ismahi an option of N20,000 fine.
