One of Africa’s finest storytellers, Ghana’s Ama Ata Aidoo, is dead.

Ms Aidoo, aged 83, died on Wednessday after a brief illness, her family said in a statement.

The family also requested privacy to grieve the demise of the well-respected author.

Ms Aidoo’s writings espoused the courage and strength of black women, themes which her works, The Dilemma of a Ghost, Our Sister Killjoy and Changes, interrogated.

She was Ghana’s secretary of education between 1982 and 1983 under President Jerry Rawlings’s administration. She resigned as education secretary when her move to make education free was frustrated.
