The federal government has increased the school fees of new students into federal government colleges, also known as federal unity schools, to N100,000.

The change in fees was initiated through the federal ministry of education.

The information was passed in a circular from the Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department of the federal ministry of education, with reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I, dated 25th May 2023, and addressed to all principals of federal unity colleges.

The circular, titled “Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term) for new students” was signed by the director of senior secondary education, Binta Abdulkadir.

The circular stated that new students of the federal unity schools are to pay N100,000 instead of the usual N45,000

“The latest fees/charge increment will affect virtually all aspects and activities of the school, including tuition and boarding fees, uniform, textbooks, deposit, exercise books, prospectus, caution fee, ID card, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, extra lesson, insurance, et al.

“Please be informed that the ministry has approved only the under-listed fees and charges for all Unity Colleges,” the memo read.

The Nigerian parents’ forum had in June 2023 protested the sudden increment in school fees for federal unity schools.

The forum appealed to President Bola Tinubu to mandate the federal ministry of education to reverse the over 100% increase in fees paid by students in federal unity schools.

The forum maintained that the increment is insensitive, ill-timed, and does not correlate with Mr Tinubu’s promise to make life easier for parents facing economic challenges due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

The House of Representatives had earlier in July directed the federal ministry of education to revert back to the old school fees for federal unity schools.
