The federal government. on Sunday, reaffirmed its commitment to improving citizens’ health and ensuring their wellness.

Nma Ogbonna, head, health promotion division, federal ministry of health and social welfare, pledged this commitment at a health promotion outreach at Divine Liberation Force Church in Mararaba, Nasarawa state.

The outreach commemorated the first National Health Promotion Day and marked the upcoming third National Health Promotion Conference, scheduled for October 29 to 31.

The theme, ‘Health Promotion: The Catalyst for Sustainable Health and Wellbeing of Nigerians’, shows the government’s focus on raising awareness and educating the public on health matters.

According to Ms Ogbonna, the federal government has unveiled a series of health promotion initiatives aimed at enhancing public health across Nigeria.

She noted the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining health and wellness.

She also stated that the government is actively engaged in programmes designed to improve healthcare accessibility and quality at the national, state, and local levels.

According to her, one of such programmes is the “10 Million Project” health promotion campaign which encourages citizens to monitor critical health metrics, such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and diabetes.

“The goal is for every Nigerian to understand their health status and take proactive steps to control any potential health issues.

“Health officials will engage communities directly through outreach programmes, including screenings at places of worship and public gatherings.

“These efforts are intended to educate individuals about the importance of regular health checks and encourage a lifestyle that incorporates physical activity and balanced nutrition,” she said.

She told the congregation that as children of God, they have the sole responsibility to take charge of their health.

Ms Ogbonna highlighted the trend of individuals neglecting regular health screenings, leading to undiagnosed conditions that can escalate into severe health crises.

She added that by empowering citizens to “know your number and control your number,” the government aims to combat issues like hypertension and diabetes, which have become increasingly prevalent.

She said that increased awareness and engagement on health promotion would lead to healthier communities across the nation.

Members of the church and the community were screened for high blood pressure, sugar level, hepatitis virus, and HIV status.
