The Federal Government has announced the realignment of the roles and responsibilities of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) to strengthen the teaching.

This is contained in a statement on Sunday in Abuja by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo.

Mrs Boriowo quoted the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, as saying the reform was aimed at streamlining education delivery and ensuring quality learning for every Nigerian child.

Mr Alausa said the restructuring reflected the ministry’s agenda to reposition its agencies in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope mandate to deliver the highest standard of education nationwide.

He explained that under the new framework, NTI would return to its core mandate of in-service teacher training and continuous professional development, while TRCN would focus exclusively on regulating the profession and licensing qualified teachers.

He stated, “Going forward, no teacher will be allowed to stand before a Nigerian classroom without proper registration and licensing by TRCN. This ensures that every child is taught by competent, professional teachers who meet the highest standards.”

He said that the federal government had also introduced new welfare terms and operational guidelines covering teacher licensing, registration, professional development, monitoring, curriculum standards, and welfare benefits.

According to him, TRCN will now enforce ethics and discipline within the profession, integrate its operations digitally with the national education management information system, and strengthen compliance.

Similarly, NTI will serve as the national implementing body for distance-based teacher training programmes, ensuring its courses align with approved standards and frameworks.

Mr Alausa called the reform “a big day for the Nigerian child,” adding that it would sustain progress in teacher quality and learning outcomes.

He said, “This reform is about results and sustainability. It is about building a future where Nigerian children are taught by the best, prepared for the best, and supported by the best. It is Renewed Hope in action.”

He assured Nigerians that the ministry would monitor implementation closely, while working with states, private school owners and other stakeholders to deliver on the mandate.
