FG shuts African refractory factory in Ogun over safety violations

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has ordered the immediate closure of African Refractory and Allied Products Company (ARAP) in Ogun State over reported violations of occupational health and safety standards.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, Annah Daniel, on Thursday in Abuja, confirming the urgent action taken to protect workers.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, directed the immediate shutdown of the facility pending a comprehensive investigation to safeguard the welfare and rights of employees exposed to unsafe conditions.
The closure followed an inspection by the Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health Department at ARAP’s facility along Km 46, Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway, Ogijo, Ogun State, where multiple safety violations were reportedly observed.
The inspection reportedly uncovered hazardous working conditions, including workers’ prolonged exposure to silica dust, a substance known to cause serious health risks, prompting swift action by authorities to prevent further harm.
Preliminary findings also revealed regulatory concerns, including irregularities in licence renewal and discrepancies between declared operations and actual production, constituting breaches of the Factories Act, Section 30, according to the ministry’s statement.
The statement noted that allegations concerning paternity issues were under review, adding that the immediate priority remained ensuring strict compliance with occupational safety standards and protecting employees from further risk or harm.
It said a joint inspection and investigative team had been established to assess compliance with health and safety regulations, evaluate operational standards, and provide recommendations to prevent future violations at the facility.
The ministry reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on safety breaches, emphasising that workers’ welfare, protection, and rights remained paramount, while urging other industries to strictly adhere to occupational safety laws and regulations.
