Four police officers in Lagos have been arrested for allegedly harassing and extorting a 16-year-old student.

The arrest follows viral pictures of the officers collecting N70,000 from a student at Isheri, Lagos, on Monday.

The images attracted the Complaint Response Unit at the Force Headquarters and it swung into actions, taking the errant officers in.

The suspects Emmanuel Michael, Sunday Odubiyi, Lawrence Amedu, Aroye Dickson have been arraigned in a court.

Lagos police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the arrested police officers have confessed to the crime and have also returned the money to the student.

The state police commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, condemned the act, saying it is detrimental to the reform agenda of the Force; he directed for immediate commencement of the officers’ trial so as to serve as a deterrent to other criminally-minded police personnel in the police command.

He also warned that the Command will spread its tentacles in fighting against such crimes and other unprofessional acts among police officers in Lagos State.

The Nigeria Police Force is perceived as one of the most corrupt institutions in Nigeria, known for stealing, extortion, and intimidation of citizens under the guise of law enforcement.

Their unabating excesses sparked a historic #EndSARS protests nationwide to call for the disbandment of a rogue police unit and end decades of police brutality.

Though SARS has been disbanded, the systemic rot in the Nigerian policing structure still rears its ugly head as citizens continue to witness acts of indiscipline in some officers.
