FRSC launches safer roads campaign in Yobe

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Yobe has commenced activities to mark the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, focusing on safer walking and cycling.
The state sector commander, Livinus Yilzoom, announced this at a news conference on Monday in Damaturu.
He said that the annual campaign was aimed at raising awareness on road safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities, among vulnerable road users.
Mr Yilzoom said the Global Road Safety Week which is scheduled from May 12 to May 18, was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly following a proposal by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in 2005.
The state sector commander said since then it had become a global platform to advance road safety discourse and interventions.
Mr Yilzoom said the theme of this year’s edition, “Streets for Life: #MakeWalkingSafe, #MakeCyclingSafe,” was carefully chosen to address the increasing risks faced by pedestrians and cyclists, especially in developing countries like Nigeria.
“This theme underscores the urgent need to protect vulnerable road users. Safe walking and cycling not only improve public health and reduce emissions but also promote equitable societies,” he said.
The state sector commander also said the FRSC had lined up several sensitisation activities in motor parks, schools and a visit to orphanage homes, among others.
“In Yobe, the Sector Command in Damaturu and unit Commands in Potiskum, Damagum, Gashua and Baimari are fully participating in this nationwide campaign.
“Our teams, including Special Marshals, Road Safety Club members, and the Road Safety Officers Wives Association (ROSOWA), will engage the public through road marches, distribution of flyers, and enlightenment talks on traffic compliance,” he said.
According to him, the weeklong campaign will conclude with Juma’at prayers on Friday, May 16 and Church service on Sunday, May 18.
“He the Corps Marshal acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the media and government in sustaining awareness on road safety.
“We encourage continued partnership in ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians,” Mr Yilzoom said.
He said FRSC remains committed to reducing road crashes and fatalities through sustained education, enforcement and stakeholder engagement.
