Kano Governor Ganduje Abdullahi has asked the federal government to make a law that would forbid nomadic cattle breeding system in Nigeria.

Mr. Ganduje reckons that that such law would stop the recurring crisis among farmers and herders across all regions in the nation. 

The governor made this comment while briefing the press in Daura, Katsina State on Sunday, the Nation reported.

He emphasised the farmers-herders conflicts would not be resolved until there is a law banning the movement of cows from the North to the Middle Belt and the Southern part comes into effect. 

“My advocacy is that we should abolish the transportation or trekking of herdsmen from the Northern part of Nigeria to the Middle Belt and to the Southern part of Nigeria.

“There should be a law that will ban, otherwise we cannot control the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and cannot control the cattle rustling, which is affecting us greatly,” he said.

Mr. Ganduje’s call follows a recent directive by the Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu who asked herders to vacate the state forest reserves. 

There has also been clashes in the Ibarapa axis of Oyo State as a Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemi, alias Igboho ordered Fulani herdsmen out of the area, citing insecurity, in defiance to a counter directive by the state government.

Mr. Ganduje mentioned that his administration has successfully curtailed insecurity in the state by establishing a RUGA cattle colony for Kano cattle herders.

“We are building a Ruga settlement in Samsosua Forest, our border with Katsina and we have succeeded in curtailing the effect of banditry in that area,” he said.
