Germany declines Poland’s World War II reparation claims
The German government has rejected Polish demands for World War II reparations in a diplomatic note, consistent with expectations.
The corresponding letter from the Foreign Ministry in Berlin was received in Warsaw on January 3, the Polish Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday evening.
According to the German government, the issue of reparations and war reparations is still closed, and the German government does not intend to enter into negotiations on this issue, the statement continued.
In early October, Poland’s Conservative Nationalist Law and Justice Party (PiS) government issued a diplomatic note demanding 1.3 trillion euros (1.38 trillion dollars) in compensation.
Compensation for the damage suffered by Poland during World War II and the occupation by Nazi Germany.
The German government rejected any demands for reparations.
For them, the issue was closed with the Two Plus Four Treaty that allowed a reunited Germany to become fully sovereign and which included the foreign policy aspects of German unity.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had already made this position clear during a visit to Warsaw in October.
