The Ghanaian government has changed the name of the international airport in the capital, from Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.

A statement from the transport ministry said the implementation of the name change would involve the systematic update of official documentation, statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, aviation publications and digital platforms.

“The government has considered it appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name,” the statement said.

The statement noted that the original name, Accra International Airport (ACC), remained the official designation in the documents of the International Civil Aviation Organisation

The airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 to honour Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, murdered in a failed coup attempt in 1967 at a location which now serves as the forecourt of the airport.(Xinhua/NAN)
