Ghana rejects MTN’s GHS20 million offer to victims of xenophobic attack in South Africa
The Ghanaian ministry of Foreign Affairs says it declined an offer of GHS20 million MTN Ghana planned for victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a memo by the ministry on Wednesday, it however commended the MTN network for the donation which it said was announced by MTN board chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms that the Mahama Administration has made adequate provision for ongoing evacuations and reintegration of Ghanaians and is therefore unable to accept this offer.
“This position of the Government of Ghana had earlier been directly conveyed to the Board Chair and CEO of MTN when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) on August 14, 2026,” it said.
It stated that it remained fully committed to current humanitarian evacuations and reintegration financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from back from “harm’s way.”
The ministry assured that it would present to the general public a comprehensive account of the total cost of evacuations upon conclusion of the exercise in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The Peoples Gazette earlier reported that Ghana petitioned the African Union over the xenophobic attacks against Blacks in South Africa.
On May 12, President John Mahama approved the evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from the rainbow country amid xenophobia in the country.
