Plans have been submitted to the Glasgow City Council to convert a building previously occupied by the Candlish Wynd United Free Church of Scotland to a furniture showroom and workshop.

The proposal followed the worshippers moving out of the building in September 2026, and it has been empty since.

According to the Glasgow Times, the soon-to-be furniture showroom, pending approval, will comprise a bespoke sofa craft studio and carpet showroom space, while three parking spaces would also be included on site.

Residents have however expressed displeasure over the proposal, and expressed worry that the addition of the spaces, which requires a dropped kerb, will reduce spaces currently on Daisy Street.

A resident was quoted as saying that, “This proposal would permanently remove another on-street parking space through the creation of a new vehicular access.

“Daisy Street already experiences severe parking pressures, with residents frequently having to park two or three streets away from their homes and double parking being commonplace due to the lack of available spaces.

“The former church is an attractive building which contributes positively to the character of Daisy Street. Replacing part of its frontage with another vehicular entrance and parking area would further erode the residential character of the street.”

Another resident stated that although he isn’t really against converting the church for commercial use, he is concerned about the current parking plan.

He said,  “If granted, this proposal will cause additional parking issues for residents. Parking is already extremely difficult in the area. Please note, I don’t object to the church being used as an appointment-only showroom. 

“I do, however, object strongly to existing parking being taken away from residents. If the proposed plan were to be considered without removing existing on-street parking, I would not oppose it.”
