The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Bemgba Paul, has charged soldiers to sustain the fight against insecurity in Katsina State and other parts of its area of responsibility.

The GOC gave the charge on Friday at the closing of the 2026 Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Competition in Katsina.

Represented by Wing Commander Nelson Okore, the GOC said troops must sustain the gains recorded in ongoing operations by remaining professional.

He further tasked them on improving intelligence gathering and maintaining a high level of operational readiness.

He said, “As we continue to confront security challenges, I charge you to remain focused, vigilant, and professional in the conduct of ongoing operations.”

According to him, the successes recorded by troops were achieved through sacrifice, resilience, and commitment.

“We must sustain the momentum through operational readiness, intelligence gathering, and cooperation with relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and security,” he said.

Mr Paul described the participants as the link between commanders and soldiers, urging them to uphold discipline and professionalism.

Congratulating the winning team, he also urged them to embrace the Army’s “Soldier First” concept by giving priority to the welfare, training, and effectiveness of troops under their supervision.

The GOC further commended participating formations for their dedication, discipline, teamwork, and exceptional display of military professionalism throughout the competition.

He thanked the Katsina State Government, the Commander of 17 Brigade, members of the organising committee, and other personnel for supporting the successful conduct of the event.

Earlier, the Commander, 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Ishaya Ibrahim, said the competition was aimed at strengthening discipline, leadership, and operational efficiency among the participating officers.

Mr Ibrahim, represented by Lt.-Col. Okore Obasi, expressed appreciation to the GOC, participating formations, officials, and guests for their support toward the successful conduct of the competition.

He described Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as critical to maintaining discipline, leadership, and operational effectiveness in the Nigerian Army.

The Headquarters 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, Katsina, has emerged as the overall winner of the competition. (NAN)
