The Enugu government has approved the establishment of the Enugu State Local Emergency Management Agency to forestall emergency activities that could be destructive in the state.

Information commissioner Aka Eze Aka disclosed this while addressing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Enugu.

He said the council also deliberated on residents who are building on waterways, describing the development as disastrous.

The commissioner added that road construction had started in Enugu, adding that the state executives also deliberated on the government’s transport infrastructure projects.

Speaking about the state Local Emergency Management Agency, the commissioner for special duties, Emeka Ajogwu, said the government would establish emergency management agencies across its 17 council areas.

He said the bill would be taken to the Enugu House of Assembly for the law to be enacted, stressing that Governor Peter Mbah was proactive in ensuring that the bill got to the state lawmakers for speedy passage.

The commissioner disclosed that the council decried an “unfortunate situation” where people built on waterways, especially the Ekulu River.

Gerald Otiji, the works commissioner, added that the state would construct a bridge crossing the Ekulu River, warning residents whose houses had been marked as illegal to desist from further construction.

“The phase one of this project starts with four terminals, namely the Enugu Central Station, which is a dual terminal at Holy Ghost, to stem the challenges of traffic and inefficiency that Enugu people faced in Holy Ghost for years,” said the transport commissioner, Obi Ozo, per the government’s transport infrastructure projects.

Mr Ozo said the stations would come with bus stops and junctions, which allowed for free movement for new BRT buses coming into Enugu, all powered by compressed natural gas and solar.

The commissioner said the terminals would allow people to have social lives like cinemas, shopping centres, and other amenities.
