Gov. Caleb Mutfwang has commended the federal government for setting up a 3,000-capacity maximum security custodial centre in Jos, Plateau.

Mr Mutfwang, who gave the commendation during a visit to the Controller General, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, on Wednesday in Abuja, lauded the initiative.

He said that the service was an important institution with the primary objective to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate offender.

The governor said that the service was not properly funded to carry out its core mandates, revealing that the state of infrastructure in Jos Custodial Centre made it difficult for meaningful reformation of offenders.

“Therefore, siting the 3000 capacity maximum modern security custodial facility in Plateau is a step in the right direction, “he said.

The governor also requested the controller general of corrections to consider Plateau indigenes in future recruitments, as well as appointments in the management of the service.

He also sought permission from the CG to allow the state to send a delegation to the prototype facility in Janguza, Kano state, to understudy the facility.

He said this was to allow the state government to provide ancillary services that may be needed for the smooth functioning of the facility when completed.

Reacting, Mr Nababa appreciated the governor for the visit.

Mr Nababa reeled out some of the interventions that the service was carrying out in Plateau state command.

He called on the governor to support the service especially as it pertained to issues bothering on the land where the facility was sited.

He also requested the governor to support the service in fostering skills and vocational training as well as formal education in custodial centres in Plateau state.

The governor also showed a documentary on a prototype facility of the commissioned 3,000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centre in Janguza, Kano state.
