Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has called on the Christian community to collaborate with the government in building a society anchored on compassion, righteousness and the fear of God.
Mr Oborevwori made the call on Friday during the 17th Synod of the Diocese of Asaba, Anglican Communion, Ecclesiastical Province of Bendel, held at Immanuel Church, Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area.
The governor described the Synod’s theme, “Christian Disciples as Diligent Seekers of God,” as timely and relevant to prevailing societal challenges.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, Mr Oborevwori said the theme reflected the biblical teaching that God is found by those who seek Him wholeheartedly.
He said that despite the social and economic challenges facing the nation, Christians must remain steadfast in faith and grounded in the word of God.
According to him, faith remains central to pleasing God, urging believers to demonstrate Christian virtues in their daily conduct.
“As followers of Christ, we are expected to be doers of the word and not hearers alone.
“We must reflect the light of Christ through integrity, humility, love and service to humanity,” he said.
The governor described the Synod’s message as a spiritual guide capable of strengthening commitment to both God and society, urging members of the Anglican Communion to embrace it with renewed dedication.
Mr Oborevwori expressed concern over rising indiscipline among young people and urged the Church to intensify efforts to guide youths through moral and spiritual teachings.
He said meaningful engagement through value-based programmes would help instil discipline, promote peaceful coexistence and foster love for humanity.
According to him, raising children and youths in the fear of God will produce responsible and patriotic citizens capable of positively influencing future generations.
“By nurturing young people with sound moral values, society will become stronger, safer and more peaceful,” he said.
The governor also appealed to the Church to sustain its role as a moral voice and continue supporting efforts toward social transformation and community development across the state.
In his address, the Bishop of the Diocese of Asaba, Rev. Kingsley Obuh, outlined key priorities of the Diocese, including strengthening evangelism, promoting effective worship for soul-winning and encouraging active participation in missionary work.
Mr Obuh also spoke on national issues, highlighting concerns over worsening insecurity, persistent electricity challenges, rising food prices and political expectations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The cleric, however, commended the state government for the progress recorded under its MORE Agenda, citing achievements in infrastructure, fiscal management, human capital development and economic diversification.
He also praised government interventions in education, healthcare, urban renewal, social investment programmes, energy and security.
