Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor’s defection comes amid a leadership tussle in the PDP, during which his godfather, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and members of his faction were suspended from the party.

Mr Fubara announced his defection to the APC on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt.

“We can’t support President (Tinubu) if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support. Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC,” Mr Fubara said.

His defection followed the defection of 17 lawmakers in the state House of Assembly to the APC.

Mr Fubara’s defection to the APC comes a few months after President Bola Tinubu suspended him amid a tussle with his godfather and declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

Suspended in March, Mr Fubara resumed office in September after settling with his godfather.
