Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River says his administration will take proactive steps towards tightening security around the border areas.

Mr Otu, who disclosed this on Friday in Calabar while meeting with elders and stakeholders of the state, said the move was critical to the security and economic growth of the state.

Cross River has witnessed a rise in illegal mining activities and boundary disputes with its neighbours in the past few years.

The governor said his administration would enhance security along the borders for effective boundary monitoring and the safety of the citizenry.

Addressing the issue of farmer-herdsmen clashes in Odukpani, Mr Otu said some conflicts resulted from avoidable misunderstandings.

“We are committed to achieving lasting peace. Cross River people are peaceful and hospitable, but our kindness must not be mistaken for weakness.

“I am concerned about the illegal exploitation of our natural resources; we are planning to collaborate with security agencies to ensure stricter enforcement,” he said.

He said his administration remained committed to protecting the people and developing sustainable infrastructure to promote public welfare.

“We are constructing roads, hospitals and schools across the state. These infrastructures are needed to support the well-being of the people,” he said.

Pam Ogar, the leader of Cross River Elders’ Forum, commended Mr Otu for convening the meeting and described it as well thought out.

Mr Ogar urged the government to conduct a headcount of those involved in mining in the state to identify and regulate their operations.

“This measure will enable us to prevent potential security breaches resulting from illegal mining activities,” he said.
