Granite-laden truck crushes cart pusher to death in Lagos

A granite-laden truck on Sunday crushed a yet-to-be-identified cart pusher to death in the Dopemu area of Lagos State.
While confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson for Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the truck driver was at top speed when it fell on its side.
Mr Taofiq said the agency had recovered the lifeless body of the victim trapped under the fallen truck at Goye by UBA inward Dopemu area of Lagos.
He said a preliminary investigation revealed that the truck driver lost control while overtaking another trailer before the container fell off the road and trapped the victim.
The spokesperson said the truck driver ran away while LASTMA officials retrieved a photocopy of his driver’s licence at the accident scene.
Mr Taofiq said the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU) had evacuated the fallen truck off the road, while the corpse had been handed over to members of the Hausa community in the Dopemu area.
He said that the general manager of LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba, commiserated with the deceased’s family and urged truck drivers and other motorists to always adhere strictly to safety standards while driving on highways.
