A youth group, the Nigerian Youths in Politics, has cautioned political actors against the intimidation of young political aspirants across various parties.

The Chairman of the group, Felix Tolorunju, gave the warning at a news conference in Abuja on Friday.

Mr Tolorunju expressed concern over alleged rising cases of intimidation targeting young aspirants, describing the trend as a direct threat to democracy.

He alleged that some young aspirants who purchased nomination forms to contest elective positions were being subjected to undue pressure.

According to him, some political actors, including governors and established political leaders, resort to intimidating young politicians once they declare interest in contesting state-level positions.

He said such actions could discourage youth participation in governance.

“The continued harassment of young aspirants amounts to an attack on the future of leadership in Nigeria and a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of youths to participate freely in the democratic process,” he said.

Mr Tolorunju called on governors, political parties and other stakeholders to desist from such acts and ensure equal opportunities for all aspirants, regardless of age or political affiliation.

He warned that if the alleged suppression continued, the group would mobilise Nigerian youths for peaceful nationwide protests against political parties and leaders accused of silencing emerging voices.

He also appealed to the media and civil society organisations (CSOs) to hold political actors accountable to the principles of fairness and inclusion.

According to him, allowing intimidation to persist will amount to a failure of democracy.

Mr Tolorunju urged young Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending their right to contest elections and contribute to national development.
