Group urges INEC to enforce regulatory electoral laws in Osun elections
A civic group, The Osun Mastermind (TOM), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strictly exercise its regulatory and oversight functions in the conduct of primary elections.
The Executive Director of TOM, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, made the appeal in an interview on Friday in Osogbo.
Mr Oyedokun-Alli said INEC should not validate any primary election that clearly violates the provisions of the Electoral Act and the erring political party’s constitution.
He said adherence to electoral laws and internal party regulations remained essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring credible elections.
“We urge the federal government to guarantee the commission’s independence and provide it with the necessary authority to enforce compliance with electoral regulations.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission must be bold, impartial and independent in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
“INEC should not validate primaries that contravene the Electoral Act or the constitutions of political parties,” he said.
The executive director added that the federal government must ensure the commission has the autonomy and institutional capacity required to discharge its mandate effectively.
Mr Oyedokun-Alli noted that credible elections and good governance could only be achieved through a strong and impartial electoral management body.
He, however, said that the only hope of achieving good governance was through an independent, impartial and courageous INEC committed to upholding the rule of law.
