Guard arraigned over alleged theft of employer’s generator battery worth N160,000

A 25-year-old security guard, Sylvanus Gambo, was on Thursday arraigned before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing his employer’s generator battery worth N160,000.
The police charged Gambo, of Malawi Goshen Auta, Masaka, Nasarawa State, with criminal breach of trust and theft by servant.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.
The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that on January 12, Mr Emmanuel Tseaa, of Peace Plaza, Utako, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarinpa Police Station.
Mrs Nwachukwu said that on January 5, the defendant was deployed to No. 89, 1st Avenue, Gwarinpa Estate, as a security guard and was entrusted with the entire building under his control, to secure properties of the company.
She said that the defendant dishonestly made away with one 100 AHMs generator battery, valued at N160,000, property of Chadok Limited, and took it outside the company premises.
Mr Nwachukwu said that during police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of his action and that efforts made to recover the stolen battery proved abortive.
According to her, the offences contravene the provisions of Sections 312 and 289 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Musa Jobbo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000, with one surety in like sum.
Mr Jobbo said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and produce reliable means of identification.
He also said that the surety’s addresses must be verified and adjourned the case until March 3 for hearing.(NAN)
