Guinea opposition leader rejects Doumbouya’s ‘fabricated’ presidential victory

Guinea’s presidential candidate, Abdoulaye Yero Balde of the Democratic Front of Guinea (FRONDEG), has rejected the election victory of coup leader Mamady Doumbouya, asserting that the polls were marred by irregularities and voter intimidation.
“These fabricated results do not weaken us,” Mr Balde said at a pressure conference on Wednesday.
Mr Doumbouya, who plotted and executed a coup to topple the Guinean democratic president in 2021, was elected president, provisional results said Tuesday.
The polls legitimised his leadership as the nation’s leader, although opponents like Mr Baldé deemed his triumph fraudulent.
Official figures showed Mr Baldé only scored six per cent of the votes while the Liberal Bloc’s Faya Lansana Millimono scored two per cent.
Mr Baldé said his party prevailed in places where voters were not intimidated.
“Where citizens were able to vote freely, without pressure or intimidation, where the tally sheets were properly drawn up and transmitted, the popular verdict was clear: the people placed us in first place,” he added.
The FRONDEG flag bearer vowed to challenge the results via legal channels but ruled out protest, insisting, “We will not call on our people to put themselves in danger.”
“We will use all legal means to demand a restoration of the truth. Everyone knows the conditions under which these results were produced, and everyone understands what they mean. It is not just a score that is being announced: it is the suppression of the sovereignty of the citizen,” he added.
