“Gunmen just wasted my husband; they thought he was rich,” says widow of slain Edo businessman

The widow of Justice ‘JuseWayne’ Oshioke, an Edo restaurateur shot dead by gunmen during an attempted kidnap last week has recounted the details of her final days with her husband.
In a video posted by Ekpoma Blog, the woman, who was in tears as she narrated her story in Pidgin English, said her husband’s mistook for someone who had money.
According to her, Mr Oshioke’s final days were filled with complaints about lack of money, prompting her to rush to reopen their restaurant just two weeks after reportedly undergoing an operation during a childbirth.
She noted that despite the pain she was experiencing while cooking, she continued to reassure her husband that the situation would be better, adding that their plans had been abruptly brought to an end by his death.
“Even though I wasn’t even strong, I started working despite a recent operation. I started cooking within two weeks. My belly would be paining as I bend to cook so that my husband would be able to make money. They thought we were wealthy,” the widow said.
She added, “Sometimes my husband would come home unhappy, complaining about the lack of money but I would tell him not to worry that I understand. Two weeks ago, he told me that I would begin cooking on Monday but I started on Saturday instead because he wanted money.”
The Peoples Gazette on Sunday reported that the incident resulting in Oshioke’s demise happened in Ekpoma town in Edo State on Saturday when the victim was killed while he was trying to escape kidnappers who
Speaking further, the widow said that he was not immediately aware of her husband’s passing because one of his friends initially downplayed the severity of the situation.
“He was trying to build our home. Like he said, he wanted us to build an empire but where’s the empire now. It was his friend that was calming me down that he was alive, not knowing my husband had died and deposited in the morgue,” she added.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
“The Edo State police command is deeply saddened by the tragic murder of Justice Abu Oshioke. He was fatally shot by unidentified armed men on 2nd May 2026 at about 9:55 p.m. at Idumebo, Ekpoma,” Ms Ikoedem said.
