Guterres urges global action against racism

António Guterres has urged countries to implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action and intensify efforts to eliminate racism and discrimination.
The DDPA is the UN’s blueprint to combat racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance worldwide.
Mr Guterres spoke in a video message to the fifth session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent in Geneva on Tuesday.
He called for bold steps to promote, protect, and fully respect the rights of people of African descent.
“Together, let’s forge a future of dignity, equality, and justice for all people of African descent and for our world,” he said.
He stressed that the fight against racism is inseparable from the broader struggle for human rights and dignity.
He said, “We must recognise specific injustices endured by people of African descent.
“Injustices rooted in centuries of enslavement, colonialism, and exploitation. Injustices perpetuated by institutions and systems needing urgent reform.”
The UN boss said the rights of people of African descent were often violated globally.
He added that subtle forms of discrimination leave deep and lasting wounds.
“Stark inequalities in power, resources, opportunities, and outcomes break down along colour lines,” he said.
Mr Guterres commended the forum’s agenda, which addresses these issues and calls for progress on reparatory justice.
He urged institutions to confront past wrongs, elevate youth voices, and protect cultural heritage.
He said, “This Forum is a crucial platform for driving meaningful change.
“This second International Decade for People of African Descent is the time to act. Thank you for coming together for this vital forum.”
