Renewed hope wins anniversary horse racing derby

One of the biggest horse races on the Nigerian schedule was staged over the weekend, and there was a memorable win on the course of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as his runner Renewed Hope won the four-day competition that came to a close at Kaduna on Saturday.
The famous race, the Hope Renewed 1st Anniversary Horse Racing Derby, is contested over 2,000 metres, but the president’s runner could not be stopped, as he ran out as a commanding victor.
Famous victory for president’s runner
The victory sparked wild celebrations at Kaduna over the weekend. The winning connection also won a brand-new car and N100,000 in prize money. This is one of the most celebrated horse racing handicapping contests in Nigeria.
Renewed Hope ran well in the closing stages to make up yards on the front-runners before eventually finishing clear of Sarauinya in second. Holiday Parade claimed third place in the race, with Nawal taking fourth in Nigeria’s most prestigious race on its horse racing schedule.
It was another hugely successful event organised by the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, with the four-day festival seeing record-breaking numbers of fans pass through the gates at the course. There were special guests in attendance throughout the event, with the Etsu Nupe in attendance for the final day of action and representatives from the Emir of Gwandu.
Renewed hope’s dominant streak continues
It has been a period of unrivalled success for Renewed Hope, as the runners have now won the last three editions of the event. The defending champion was a short-price favourite in the betting to retain his prestigious honour as the fastest horse in Nigeria this year, and he delivered his best performance of the campaign to land victory in the event.
The long-term success that the horse has been able to achieve has been hugely important to the sport’s maintaining its popularity in Nigeria, with the event being one of the most attended and watched in Africa. Etsu Nupe recalled this after the event, as he stated that it’s an important sporting event on the schedule to prevent traditions and cultures from going extinct.
The race is one of the most important events of the year in Nigeria to preserve that status, and as such, there is no shortage of traditions in effect at the racecourse on race day. It has traditionally been the historic event on the schedule, with residents in the region able to take advantage of the economic opportunities that arise when major horse racing events are staged in the area.
Future plans
After the successful four-day event this year, the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria is planning to make sweeping changes in the coming years, as it was revealed that there is hope that a course in Nigeria could soon host a Grade One event during the meeting. It was stated that this could have a huge impact on the sport within the country, as it could spark a tourist boom with more significant numbers of international visitors likely to attend for a prestigious race day with big prize money on offer.
The Etsu Nupe revealed that the plans are hugely ambitious, but the HRFC hopes to take influence from significant events on the horse racing schedule, such as the U.S. Triple Crown, the Dubai World Cup, and Royal Ascot. Horse racing is still in its infancy in Nigeria, as the federation has only staged events since 2019. However, the plans are hugely ambitious, with organisers hopeful of staging regular horse racing meets across the country throughout the year.
The key to success for the HRFC comes from its platform to work with other African nations to achieve similar goals within Africa. At present, there are five participating nations involved in planning events, which include Cameroon, Mali, Chat, Niger, and Burkina Faso. However, there is still a long way to go before racing in these regions can reach the heights achieved in South Africa.
Horse racing in South Africa could be a perfect template for organisers, as the nation hosts some of the most prestigious events in the region. Over 30 Grade 1s are staged throughout the year in South Africa, including the hugely popular Durban July, the richest race of the year in Africa. One of the most prestigious races on the calendar is the South African Derby, run annually in April over 2,450 metres. This race for horses aged three boasts a purse of R 2,000,000 and has been won by some of the most legendary horses in South African history, including Horse Chestnut, Legal Eagle, and Samurai Warrior.
