Days after a school in Ogba, Lagos, collapsed, a mother, Shofumi Adepoju, has shared an emotional testimony in church about how her twin sons narrowly escaped the incident.

Speaking during a thanksgiving testimony, Ms Adepoju said her sons were inside the Introtech laboratory at Yemco School when the building was evacuated shortly before it collapsed on Monday.

“It is our school that collapsed on Monday. These twins were inside. When they were marching out, my twins were inside the Introtech lab,” she said.

Ms Adepoju said her sons only realised something was wrong when one of them stepped out of the Introtech lab and noticed that all students had been evacuated.

“It was one of them that came out and saw that the whole school was empty. They peeped through the window and saw that many people were outside, so they started running downstairs. They said it was not even up to two minutes afterwards that the school collapsed,” she said.

According to Ms Adepoju, the collapse prompted her sons to insist on going to church to give thanks.

“They told me this morning, ‘Mummy, we must come to CLAM to say thank you, Lord,’” she said.

She commended a woman she identified as Mummy Akudayo, whom she said helped evacuate many students from the building before it came down.

“Mummy Akudayo marched 368 students out of the building,” she said.

The collapse occurred at Yemco Schools, located on Adu Street behind County Hospital in Ogba, Lagos.

Videos circulating online show students being evacuated as a window fell out of the building moments before the entire structure collapsed.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Lagos State Building Control Agency confirmed that the four-storey building collapsed with no casualties recorded.

The agency said officials visited the site alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and other responders to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

“Preliminary observations indicate that some form of building activity had been ongoing at the property prior to the incident. However, a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collapse,” said LASBCA. “Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with relevant authorities as technical assessments and necessary safety procedures continue at the site.”
