A housewife, Naima Yusuf, on Tuesday approached the Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa, seeking confirmation of divorce from her husband, Bilyaminu Otu.

She told the court that her husband married her under Sharia Islamic law.

The mother of one alleged that her husband left her when she was four months pregnant and had not shown interest in the marriage since then.

She further told the court that she gave birth to a baby girl who is now six months old.

”My husband has refused to visit me to see his baby. He told me that he was not interested in the marriage. All efforts to get him to come back and confirm the divorce failed,” she told the court.

She asked the court to confirm the divorce and order the respondent to provide for his child.

Mr Otu told the court to grant his wife the divorce confirmation.

“I will not be challenging my wife’s prayer for custody of our child until the baby is of age,” he told the court.

He also agreed to provide N50,000 monthly for the child’s upkeep.

The judge, Mohammed Shomo, adjourned the matter until September 16 for further hearing.
