I have not endorsed any candidate for 2027, says Gov Alia

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State said he has not endorsed any candidate for 2027, following reports that some individuals are using his name to canvass support ahead of the general elections.
Mr Alia made the clarification in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Tersoo Kula, on Thursday in Makurdi.
The governor strongly advised such aspirants across the state to desist from the practice with immediate effect.
He stated that he has neither asked, encouraged, nor authorised any individual to contest for any political office in the state.
Alia described the actions as misleading, unauthorised and a deliberate attempt to deceive the public for personal political gain.
“I had directed those in my administration to resign on or before 31 March 2026 and pursue their ambitions. Those who were prepared have already complied. Those who failed to do so should not apportion blame to anyone. As a product of the people’s choice myself, I am not the one to determine anyone’s electoral fate,” he said
“The people are there to decide and make their choices. I am not making choices for anyone. If you intend to contest elections, go out and engage with your constituents; persuade them to choose you. That is democracy,” Mr Alia added.
He noted that those engaging in such conduct were undermining their prospects, as it erodes credibility and public trust.
Mr Alia reiterated his commitment to fairness, due process and internal democracy, noting that the people of Benue will determine their leaders at the appropriate time.
