I need N500,000 to remarry, estranged husband tells divorce-seeking wife; rejects N80,000 dowry

“If we don’t settle during this period, I can only accept N500,000 from her because N80,000 would not be enough for me to remarry in this economy,” Mr Tijani said.

Ahmad Tijani on Tuesday demanded a N500,000 settlement from his wife, Firdausi Shu’aibu, over a divorce suit filed against him at the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna.

Ms Shu’aibu asked the court to dissolve their marriage through Khul’i, a form of divorce in which a woman returns her dowry in exchange for her freedom.

“The dowry is N80,000, and I am willing to pay back the money in full,” she said.

The defendant asked the court for time to discuss the matter with their elders.

“If we don’t settle during this period, I can only accept N500,000 from her because N80,000 would not be enough for me to remarry in this economy,” he said.

The judge, Mu’awiyya Shehu, asked the complainant if she agreed with the defendant’s demand.

Ms Shu’aibu answered, “No, I can only return the exact dowry he paid.”

The judge adjourned the case to July 30 for a hearing on the defendant’s reason for demanding N500,000.
