IMF appoints Mateusz Szczurek as European department director

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Mateusz Szczurek as the director of its European department, succeeding Alfred Kammer, who is set to retire.
The appointment, announced on Tuesday, June 2, by the IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, will take effect from July 27, 2026.
The IMF’s European department focuses on economic policy, reforms, technical assistance, and financial support across the EU member states.
Mr Szczurek is a Polish economist with extensive experience in the banking sector, including serving as chief economist for Central and Eastern Europe at ING.
From 2013 to 2015, he served as Poland’s Minister of Finance, overseeing fiscal policy, public debt management, international economic reforms, and financial sector supervision to strengthen public administration.
Between 2016 and 2024, he worked at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he led macroeconomic assessments, reform monitoring, and policy dialogue across EU countries. He also served on the inaugural European Fiscal Board, contributing to discussions on Europe’s fiscal governance framework.
Since 2024, he has been a member of the management board and chief risk officer at Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), where he oversees risk management, ESG frameworks, sectoral analysis, and financial modelling.
