Imo government seeks destruction of seized illicit drugs to stop recirculation

The Imo government has said that it will be best to destroy all seized narcotics as part of measures to fight drug trafficking and abuse.
The special adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Ezechukwu Obonnaya, said this while destroying some seized, illegal hard drugs in Owerri on Monday.
Mr Obonnaya described the destruction of confiscated narcotics and illicit drugs as “a critical step in disrupting the drug trade and preventing the recirculation of seized substances”.
He said that the destruction prevents recirculation by ensuring that seized substances cannot re-enter the market. He also said that destroying confiscated hard drugs disrupts their supply chain by weakening drug trafficking networks and also deters crime.
Mr Obonnaya said that methods of destruction include incineration, chemical neutralisation, and secure disposal. He urged relevant authorities to maintain detailed records of seized substances and ensure destruction was witnessed by authorities.
Mr Obonna further said that destroying the drugs had the ability to enhance public safety, support law enforcement efforts, and reduce drug-related crimes.
“The destruction of confiscated narcotics is a vital step in combating drug trafficking. By following a well-planned roadmap, authorities can ensure the safe and effective destruction of seized substances, preventing recirculation and disrupting supply chains,” he said.
